Love is a Four-Legged Word

On November 9th, 2018 my parents surprised me with a puppy. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted a puppy. Every Christmas, birthday and even Easter I would ask for a puppy and would even spend my free time searching for the cutest dogs. Every year, we’d have those instances where my mom would be so close to adopting a puppy. But every time we picked out a specific puppy she changed her mind at the last minute. Truly I think my upcoming 16th birthday had something to do with her decision to adopt Bentley.

When we met Bentley, he was only 1 pound and had the fluffiest face and the softest hair (he actually has hair because he’s hypoallergenic). However, he has a habit that is very unusual for dogs. He DOESN’T bark. Whether its the doorbell or keys unlocking the door, he doesn’t bark. Whenever we go out of town he stays with my grandma who has three cats and he doesn’t bark at them either.

Bentley also has a morning routine. Every morning when we wake up we find him in the same place. He’s always sitting where the sun rays shine through our window. He lays in the sun for hours minding his business and he remains there until the rays are gone. It’s really funny because it’s just him and the sun. He doesn’t bring any of his toys or any food. He just sits there and stares at the door occasionally cleaning himself.

Another and probably the coolest trick my dog can do is give high fives. What's so ironic is that no one taught him how. One day my mom said, “High Five Bentley,” and he knew exactly what to do. At first, I didn’t believe her but it turns out if you say “High Five Bentley” and put both your hands up (low enough for him to reach) he’ll give you a high five.

One of the cutest habits my dog does to end his night his giving me a kiss on the cheek. Every night before we put him to bed he gives me a kiss on the cheek. I think that's his way of giving me permission to put him to bed. I also think that's his way of saying I'm excited to start another day with you.

  1. Bentley looks so sweet! And he sounds like such a great dog. My dog starts barking if she hears the sound of car doors slamming over a block away. Also, it's kind of incredibly that Bentley just inherently knew what "high five" meant. It took about a month to teach my dog that and she's too dumb to realize that she can also high five with her left paw, so she only does that trick with her right paw.

  2. It's super cute the relationship you have with your dog, Bentley seems super sweet. If I am walking home my dog is barking and tackles me as I come in the door. Also if Bentley is that smart you should try and see if he knows other tricks!

  3. Bentley sounds like an amazing puppy! I like your description of his habits, they were very interesting and captivating. I can't believe he was only one pound when you met him, that's so small! I'm glad he seems to bring so much joy to your life. You do a good job of conveying that joy through your writing.

  4. BENTLEY IS THE CUTEST THING EVER! It also seems like he has 200 IQ because my dog took forever to learn high 5's and Bentley knew it instantly. He seems like the sweetest and meeting him would probably be super fun.
