We Are Family

On the first day of school when Dr. Majerus told us to think about something peaceful I immediately thought about my aunt. My aunt is one of my best friends in the entire world. She’s the coolest person ever and an overall beautiful person on the inside and out. The overall memory was us riding around town in her convertible into the sunset. But there were a lot more memories that make this moment so special.

We started off the day by eating some of my grandmother’s famous cooking. We ate fried chicken, greens and cornbread which is in opinion her signature dish. Nothing beats starting the day off with happy taste buds. After we finished my aunt took me to a surprise location. I had no idea where we were going but we were jamming out. The wind blowing our hair back and the music blasting from the stereos is something I always look forward to in the summer. We finally arrived at daycare. Right then and there I knew we were here to see my cousins who I hadn’t seen in about 8 years. She’s about 5 years younger than me but she moved to Indianapolis when I was about 8. I couldn’t believe it, I almost cried. I missed her so much it was unreal. We hung out so much when I visited my grandparents that I considered both her and her brother to be my siblings. It was crazy to see how much they had grown. We stayed there for about an hour and then my aunt said it was time to go. I was sad but there was still more my mom had planned.

We rode around in her convertible until we reached a house. I remembered this house and immediately got happy. I was going to see my two cousins that I had met for the first time a couple of years back. As soon as we met each other we immediately hit it off. They’re some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I also hadn’t seen them in a long time so it was really nice to reconnect with them. Once it was time to leave my aunt said she had one more stop. So as usual, we hopped in the convertible and road with the wind.

Finally, we pulled up to a very familiar house. I visit that house almost every time I come to visit my grandparent’s house. It was my best friend/cousin Jordyn’s house. We have been best friends since I was four years old. I honestly can’t remember a time where she wasn’t in my life. My aunt and I went inside for a little bit and then it was time for us to go. My dad would be back at my grandparents any minute so we had to rush back. But that’s what makes my memory so special.

While we were rushing back we had to go on the highway into the sunset. While my aunt was driving we could feel the warm summer breeze against our face and hair. I think what’s so meaningful about this moment is the memories associated with the car ride. The fact that my aunt went out of her way to take me all around town to visit my cousins is very meaningful.

  1. It's wonderful that you associate family, specifically your aunt, with peace and tranquility. I wish I could say the same about my family :( . I also enjoyed your vivid imagery in the post, it really helped me visualize the situation. Great touch!
