Rap: Something that Should be Explored
Based on all the poems and poets that we’ve learned about thus far, I really think we should learn more about rap. I know many people when they think of poetry don’t automatically think of rap but there are some really forms of expression. Most of the time rappers convey how they feel about a certain topic through verse and rhyme. The coolest element of rap I think is when they somehow manage to find a rhyme or slant rhyme to everything they say at the end of a verse. For example in Tupacs Keep ya Head Up he says
When brothas make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don't we'll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
And since a man can't make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up
I know you're fed up ladies, but keep your head up
When brothas make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don't we'll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
And since a man can't make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up
I know you're fed up ladies, but keep your head up
What I think is cool about this is that all of his rhymes and verses relate back to the main point of the song which is to keep your head up. If we were to point our certain lines and verses that relate back to the overall theme I think it would be beneficial to everyone regardless of whether they like rap or not.
